Ukraine’s number two player, Marta Kostyuk, will not be competing at the WTA 500 tournament in London. The Ukrainian has withdrawn from the competition due to an injury to her right ankle ahead of her first-round match.

This has been reported by “Suspilne Sport”. The HSBC Championships in London are being held on grass from 8 to 14 June. According to the WTA, the first matches of the main draw are scheduled for 8–9 June.

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has withdrawn from the WTA 500 tournament in London.

This was to be her first grass-court tournament of the season ahead of Wimbledon. The reason for her withdrawal was an injury to her right ankle.

In the first round, Kostyuk was due to play against 17-year-old British tennis player Mika Stoysavlevich. However, the Ukrainian withdrew before the match even began.

Her place in the main draw was taken by Croatian player Donna Vekić, who entered the tournament as a ‘lucky loser’.

What is known about the tournament in London

The WTA 500 tournament in London is being held at Queen’s Club under the name HSBC Championships.

According to the WTA, qualifying took place on 6–7 June, with first-round matches in the main draw scheduled for 8–9 June, the second round on 10–11 June, the quarter-finals on 12 June, the semi-finals on 13 June, and the final on 14 June.

The WTA also noted that Kostyuk was among the standout players at the tournament following her run to the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

How Kostyuk approached the grass-court season

Marta Kostyuk approached the start of the grass-court season on the back of the best run of her career.

According to the WTA, in 2026 the Ukrainian won tournaments in Rouen and Madrid. On the WTA website, Kostyuk is listed as the world number 12, and her titles for the 2026 season include Madrid and Rouen.

At Roland Garros, Kostyuk reached her first-ever Grand Slam semi-final. In the quarter-finals, she defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and extended her winning streak on clay to 17 matches.

This run came to an end in the Roland Garros semi-finals, where Kostyuk lost to Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, who is competing under a neutral status.

What’s next

Kostyuk is set to compete at Wimbledon in late June.

According to “Suspilne Sport”, the Ukrainian has qualified directly for the main draw of the tournament for the sixth consecutive time. Her best result at Wimbledon is the third round in 2023 and 2024.

It is not yet known how serious the injury to her right ankle is or whether it will affect Kostyuk’s preparations for Wimbledon.

What matters

Withdrawing from the tournament in London does not mean Kostyuk is pulling out of the entire grass-court season.

At present, it is specifically about missing the first tournament after Roland Garros due to an injury to her right ankle.
