Police have arrested a man who carried out an explosion at a Nova Poshta terminal in Kyiv
Counter-intelligence officers and investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine, in conjunction with the National Police, have detained a man suspected of involvement in the explosion at one of the ‘Nova Poshta’ terminals in the Obolon district of Kyiv on 5 June.
According to the investigation, the explosion occurred in the morning whilst parcels were being unloaded. One of the branch’s employees was killed in the blast, and two other people sustained injuries.
The investigation established that the parcel contained fragmentation munitions, the shipment of which is prohibited. Law enforcement officials have identified the sender of the parcel as a 35-year-old man originally from the Donetsk region, who currently resides in the Zaporizhzhia region.
According to the investigation, the man sent the illegally acquired weapons to an acquaintance in Kyiv, in breach of safety regulations.
SBU operatives and National Police officers detained the suspect at his place of residence in the Zaporizhzhia region. During urgent searches, law enforcement officers seized a mobile phone which, according to their information, contained details of the parcel’s contents and its dispatch.
Investigators from the Security Service informed the detainee that he was suspected of an offence under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning the unlawful handling of weapons, ammunition or explosive substances.
The Solomyanskyi District Court of Kyiv imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of detention without the possibility of bail.
A pre-trial investigation is currently underway, during which law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the incident.
The operation was carried out by officers of the SBU Main Directorate in Kyiv and the Kyiv Region, and the Zaporizhzhia SBU Directorate, with the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office overseeing the proceedings.
