Volodymyr Zelenskyy interviewed in London for the Guardian
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russian political influence has waned in a number of countries and outlined the conditions which, in his view, could bring the war to an end.

In an interview with The Guardian, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia’s political influence over other countries is gradually waning. According to him, Azerbaijan remains independent, and the results of the recent elections in Armenia have been a major success for that country’s independence. He also expressed the view that Russia has lost Moldova.

At the same time, Zelenskyy noted that Moscow does not want to lose Ukraine, as an independent and free Ukraine, in his view, is the largest and politically most dangerous country for Russia.

The President believes that after Ukraine joins the European Union, Vladimir Putin will face internal problems. According to him, various peoples, particularly in the Caucasus, will raise further questions about Russia’s future.

The Head of State also stated that there are differing views on the war within Putin’s inner circle. According to him, some people are in favour of continuing it, whilst others are seeking an end to hostilities. Zelenskyy added that business representatives understand the difficult state of the Russian economy.

In his view, peace will be closer if Western countries, particularly European states, Canada and the US, do not ease sanctions and also step up pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet and other sectors of the economy. At the same time, Ukraine must remain steadfast on the battlefield.

The President said that through one of the businessmen he had received information about a possible framework for diplomatic negotiations. He emphasised that Ukraine had been ready for negotiations from the very start of the war and is seeking its conclusion.

Separately, Zelenskyy mentioned the talks between Russia and the US in Anchorage. In his words, discussing the Ukrainian issue without Ukraine’s participation was a mistake. The President also expressed his conviction that Putin had misled the President of the United States. At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine is ready for negotiations but will not agree to the transfer of its territories.

The President also announced agreements with the E3 countries on strengthening missile defence. According to him, the partners will assist Ukraine with anti-ballistic defence capabilities.

Zelenskyy expressed hope for the creation of a European anti-ballistic system in collaboration with the United Kingdom. According to him, such a system is necessary for both Ukraine and the British side.

He cited sanctions policy as another key issue. The President noted that during the E3 meeting, all participants agreed on the need to further tighten sanctions against Russia.

Zelenskyy also stated the need to transition the Ukrainian army to a contract-based system. He said that military service involves high risks, so servicemen should receive decent pay. To this end, he emphasised, Ukraine needs additional funding from its partners.

The President added that the current level of pay for Ukrainian military personnel is significantly lower than the sums Russia pays its mercenaries, and expressed hope for continued support from allies.
