Zelensky discussed steps to advance diplomacy with Witkoff and Kushner
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported on a conversation he had with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, special representatives of US President Donald Trump.
According to the head of state, the conversation was “very positive”, reports DW. He thanked his interlocutors for their willingness to work as actively as possible in the coming weeks to advance diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During the conversation, Zelenskyy briefed the American representatives on the available information regarding Moscow’s intentions. He also expressed his gratitude for their respect for Ukrainians and their positive assessment of Ukraine’s position.
The parties paid particular attention to global security challenges. In addition to the Russia-Ukraine war, the situation in the Middle East was discussed. Zelenskyy noted that global attention is largely focused on events surrounding Iran, yet the issue of achieving peace in Europe remains relevant.
The participants also discussed next steps in the context of the G7 summit and other international events scheduled for June.
According to Axios journalist Barak Ravid, the conversation took place over the phone during a technical stopover of the Ukrainian president’s plane at Chisinau airport. At the time, Zelenskyy was returning to Kyiv following talks in London with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
During the meeting in London, the leaders discussed the conditions for achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine. They also discussed increasing pressure on the Russian economy, boosting military aid to Ukraine, and joint production of missiles to strengthen air defence capabilities and enable long-range strikes.
