Andy Burnham has become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
This is according to the BBC.
This took place at around 14:20 Kyiv time, after which he left Buckingham Palace and headed to Downing Street to deliver his first speech.
King Charles of the United Kingdom invited him to form a government during a private meeting at Buckingham Palace.
Later, Buckingham Palace issued a full statement confirming the appointment of Andy Bernam as Prime Minister.
“His Majesty received the Honourable Member of Parliament Andrew Burnham in audience and entrusted him with forming a new government. The Honourable Member of Parliament Andrew Bernam accepted the King’s offer and kissed his hand following his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” the statement read.
King Charles also received Mr Burnam’s wife, Marie-France van Gil.
It is worth recalling that Keir Starmer officially stepped down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 July. He had led the government since July 2024 following the Labour Party’s resounding victory in the snap general election, in which it won over 400 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.
