Ricky Martin, who had wanted to visit Ukraine, surprised everyone with a cynical act at a concert in Kazakhstan
From the stage, Martin greeted the audience with the words: “Good evening, Almaty!”, and later thanked them in Russian for their warm welcome and smiles, saying “Spasibo”. He spoke without any noticeable accent.
Only then did he switch to English, promising to return to Kazakhstan once more and paying a compliment to the local cuisine.
It is worth noting that in recent years, Kazakhstan has become one of the countries that international artists often choose for concerts due to the large number of Russian audience members, whilst avoiding performances in Russia itself so as not to face a wave of criticism and the culture of cancellation. At the same time, within Kazakhstan itself, the issue of using the Russian language has become more sensitive since the start of the full-scale war and sometimes sparks heated public debate.
This issue is particularly contentious given the singer’s previous stance on Ukraine. Previously, Ricky Martin had shown support for a Ukrainian fan, Olena, who told him that his music was helping her cope with the war. The artist even addressed her in Ukrainian on social media at the time, presumably using an online translator.
In his post, the singer thanked the fan for her kind words and wrote that he hopes to visit Ukraine and give a concert there in the near future.
