On the evening of 1 May, an incident involving military personnel occurred in the town of Shakhtarsk, in the Dnipropetrovsk region. A shooting, the abduction and beating of a local resident resulted in the victim being hospitalised and three suspects being detained

This has been reported by Serhiy Filimonov, commander of the ‘Wolves of Da Vinci’ battalion, whose fighters were involved in the conflict.

According to law enforcement officials, the issue of notifying the detainees of the charges against them is currently being resolved. In parallel with the official investigation, an internal inquiry has been launched within the unit. The battalion command issued a statement in which it described the behaviour of its subordinates as unacceptable and such as to discredit the image of the Ukrainian soldier.

The unit’s position: “We are ashamed”

The “Da Vinci Wolves” emphasise that, despite the difficult combat tasks and daily psychological strain on the front line, such actions are inexcusable. The unit did not seek to cover up the incident or shift the blame onto individuals, but instead declared collective responsibility for the incident.

For the battalion, the community of Shakhtarsk is special, as it is a town that effectively lives alongside the war and constantly supports the defenders. That is precisely why the soldiers note that it is particularly painful for them that such an incident occurred here of all places.

Action speaks louder than words: the community will decide on work for the soldiers

In addition to assisting the law enforcement agencies with the investigation, the battalion has offered the Shakhtarsk community direct compensation. The unit’s officers and soldiers have expressed their willingness to work for the town’s needs, to demonstrate their remorse through actions, not just words.

Residents were urged to submit suggestions regarding the assistance required: from maintenance and repair work to the upkeep of public spaces. Once the ideas have been collected, the battalion will publish them for an open vote, so that the community itself can decide what tasks the soldiers should carry out. The command assures that everyone involved will face punishment, and the unit will do everything possible to restore public trust.
