Day 43 of the war in the Middle East: Donald Trump has declared Iran’s military defeat and stated that the US is prepared to use force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Whilst the world anxiously awaits the markets’ reaction, the final round of diplomacy is beginning in Pakistan: direct talks between Washington and Tehran

US resolve: The Strait will remain open

At 07:40, US President Donald Trump confirmed Washington’s uncompromising stance. He emphasised that the Strait of Hormuz is international waters, and the US will not allow Iran to use them for blackmail. According to Trump, Iran has already lost militarily, and any attempt to close the strait will receive an immediate response from the US.

Diplomacy in Islamabad

Today, a negotiation process is set to begin in the Pakistani capital, mediated by third parties. The aim is to halt the further escalation of the conflict. It is expected that the parties will move to direct dialogue later today.

Iran’s position: Galibaf’s ultimatum

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament has stated that he is ready to reach an agreement only on condition of genuine concessions from the US. He accused the Americans of violating previous agreements and warned that if the negotiations turn into a ‘show’, Tehran will defend its rights by force.

The Middle East remains the world’s main ‘powder keg’, where 11 April could become the day of either a major compromise or a new escalation.
