Brazil has added car manufacturer BYD to its list of offenders for exploiting workers
This is according to Reuters.
The decision was taken following an investigation into an incident in 2024, when more than 160 foreign specialists fell victim to labour exploitation by the company’s contractor.
Despite BYD’s claims of being unaware of the actions of the hired intermediary firm, the country’s authorities have placed full responsibility for working conditions at the site squarely on the main client.
Officials stress that the car manufacturer was obliged to monitor compliance with staff rights at its construction site.
Being included on this list prevents the Chinese automotive giant from accessing preferential financing and certain types of loans from local banks.
Although this does not halt the company’s operations, the situation creates serious financial constraints and reputational risks in a market that is strategically important for the brand.
