The Canadian national team heads into the 2026 World Cup as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, with ambitions to progress beyond the group stage for the first time. Jesse Marsch’s side will look to capitalise on home support and a generation of players considered among the strongest in the country’s history.

The Canadian national team is heading into the 2026 World Cup with high expectations following a successful campaign at the 2024 Copa América, where the team reached the semi-finals. Head coach Jesse Marsch has repeatedly described the current squad as the best in the history of Canadian football.

The core of the team consists of players in their early twenties, many of whom play in European leagues. The Canadians play a 4-4-2 formation and rely on high pressing, quick ball recovery and swift counter-attacks down the flanks. The local media have dubbed this style of play ‘Maplepressing’.

One of the team’s main strengths is considered to be the atmosphere within the squad. Jesse Marsch has expanded his squad options whilst maintaining team unity. Wingers Alphonso Davies and Tae-jon Buchanan play a key role in attack, whilst the team’s all-time leading goalscorer, Jonathan David, remains the main striking force.

At the same time, the coaching staff faces certain squad issues. Jesse Marsch has already confirmed that Maxim Krepo will be the first-choice goalkeeper for the tournament, though both he and Dane St. Clair have had an inconsistent season in the MLS. There are also concerns regarding the fitness of players returning from injury. Defender Moise Bombito, considered the team’s best centre-back, may not be fit in time for the start of the tournament.

Particular attention is focused on Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich defender is one of the most successful players in Canadian history and scored the national team’s first goal at a World Cup. Due to injury, he will miss the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 12 June, but the team is hoping he will return during the tournament.

Another key player is Jonathan David. The Juventus forward became Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer in 2024 and currently has 39 goals for the national team. Before moving to the Italian club, he played for Lille, with whom he won the French league title in the 2020/21 season.

Among the attacking players, Tae-jon Buchanan of Villarreal also stands out. After a less than successful spell at AC Milan, he has become a regular for the Spanish club and remains one of the most dangerous players on the flanks.

Jesse Marsch took charge of the national team ahead of the 2024 Copa América and led them to fourth place in the tournament. For the 52-year-old American coach, this is his first experience working with the Canadian national team.

The Canadians qualified automatically for the World Cup as co-hosts of the tournament. The team has not played any competitive matches since losing to Guatemala on penalties in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June 2025.

In Canada, where ice hockey and lacrosse traditionally dominate, football has continued to grow in popularity in recent years. Youth participation in the sport is on the rise, and the national team is already reaping the rewards of this work.

At previous World Cups, Canada played six matches and lost every single one. In 1986, the team failed to score a single goal, whilst at the 2022 World Cup they scored twice, one of which was an own goal by the opposition.

At the 2026 World Cup, the Canadian national team will compete in Group B alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland. One of the team’s main goals will be to reach the World Cup play-offs for the first time in history.
