Four Chinese companies have been included in the new UK sanctions package.
China has called on the UK to lift the new sanctions imposed on Chinese companies due to their alleged links to the Russian military sector. Beijing has described London’s decision as misguided and stated its readiness to defend the interests of its businesses.

This was reported by Reuters, citing a statement from the Chinese Embassy in the UK.

The Chinese Embassy in the UK has stated that it has lodged a so-called ‘strong protest’ with the British authorities following the announcement of a new package of sanctions.

Beijing has stated that London must rectify this “mistake” and lift the restrictions on Chinese companies.

The Chinese side also warned that it would take the necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises.

What caused the dispute

Four Chinese companies have been included in the new British sanctions package.

The UK government believes they are involved in supplying Russia with critical equipment that could be used for military purposes.

The sanctions form part of a wider package of restrictions targeting Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ and financial schemes designed to circumvent international sanctions.

What is Beijing’s position on the war?

The Chinese embassy has stated that China advocates a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine and controls the export of dual-use goods.

It also emphasised that economic cooperation between China and Russia should not be subject to external interference.

At the same time, Western countries have repeatedly expressed concern over the supply to Russia of products that could be used in the production of weapons and military equipment.

What sanctions has the UK imposed?

The UK’s new package of sanctions is aimed at entities which, according to London, are helping Russia to continue the war against Ukraine.

Companies not only from China but also from Thailand and Turkey have been hit by the restrictions.

In addition, the sanctions target vessels belonging to Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’, which are used to transport energy resources in circumvention of international restrictions.

What is known about the EU sanctions

The European Union had previously imposed sanctions on 81 individuals and entities linked to the Russian military-industrial complex and schemes to circumvent sanctions.

According to European officials, Brussels is also preparing a new package of restrictions against Russia.
