Austria kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a win over Jordan
The final stages of the 23rd FIFA World Cup are currently underway in the USA, Mexico and Canada. In the second Group J match, Austria beat Jordan 3–1 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute. Romano Schmid scored with a precise strike from outside the penalty area to put the Austrians ahead.
Early in the second half, Jordan equalised. In the 50th minute, Ali Olwan scored to level the score.
In the 76th minute, the Austrian national team regained the lead following an own goal by Yazan Al-Arab. The final score was sealed in stoppage time by Marko Arnautović, who converted a penalty in the 90+12th minute.
In the other Group J match, reigning world champions Argentina beat Algeria 3–0. Lionel Messi scored all three goals for Argentina.
In the second round, Austria will face Argentina on 22 June, whilst Jordan will take on Algeria on 23 June.
As a reminder, 48 national teams are taking part in the 2026 World Cup finals for the first time. The tournament final will take place on 19 July in New York.
