Clashes broke out at the headquarters of Turkey’s opposition party following a court ruling
Clashes broke out on Sunday in the Turkish capital outside the central offices of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), according to TRTHaber.
The conflict arose between supporters of the party’s current leader, Özgür Özeli, and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, whom the court reinstated as CHP leader.
Representatives of the Ankara Regional Court of Appeal arrived at the party headquarters to deliver the ruling on the party congress and ensure the central office was vacated.
Following this, supporters of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu arrived at the building. When they attempted to enter, clashes broke out between them and those inside the headquarters.
Stones and water bottles were thrown into the courtyard of the CHP office. The police used tear gas and entered the building.
Some party members attempted to barricade the doors with furniture and prevent the police from advancing inside the office.
After the official notice was served, Özgür Özal left the party headquarters and headed to parliament.
Police continue to maintain a heavy security presence around the CHP’s central office in Ankara.
On 21 May, a Turkish court annulled the results of the Republican People’s Party’s 2023 congress, during which a new leadership was elected. The court ruled that the party’s former leader and other officials should be reinstated.
