In the Kosmichny district of Zaporizhzhia, police officers were attacked whilst carrying out a routine check on a driver. A 49-year-old man has been charged.

In the Kosmichny district of Zaporizhzhia, patrol officers stopped a vehicle that appeared to be involved in a road traffic accident. The driver failed to comply with the lawful order to stop, did not produce his documents for inspection, and left the scene.

The officers caught up with the offender. During a second attempt to flee, he lost control of the vehicle. The patrol officers then began to investigate the circumstances of possible administrative offences.

The situation escalated during the exchange. The driver’s 49-year-old father intervened in the conflict. He behaved aggressively, threatened the police officers with an axe, threw stones at them and used tear gas.

The assailant was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

As a result of the incident, one of the patrol officers sustained bodily injuries and sought medical attention.

Investigators from Department No. 4 of the Zaporizhzhia District Police Department, under the procedural supervision of the Shevchenkivskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee that he was suspected of an offence under Part 2 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The court imposed a preventive measure in the form of house arrest.

Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the 27-year-old driver for breaching the Highway Code. It was also established that he held the status of a reservist, after which he was handed over to personnel of the Military Law Enforcement Service.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
