In Odessa, a soldier has been charged in connection with a road traffic accident that resulted in one fatality and injuries to passengers on a minibus. He has been remanded in custody.

The State Bureau of Investigations has notified a military serviceman that he is under suspicion for causing a road traffic accident on Balkivska Street in Odesa on 7 April 2026.

According to the investigation, the driver of a Volkswagen Transporter was travelling in the same direction as a public bus but failed to maintain a safe speed, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the bus. There were around 20 passengers on board the bus.

As a result of the accident, one female passenger died and a further 14 people were injured.

Following the accident, officers from the State Bureau of Investigations arrived at the scene and began initial investigative procedures. Forensic examinations are ongoing, in particular to determine the driver’s condition at the time of the incident.

The court has ordered the soldier to be remanded in custody. He is currently under medical supervision.

He is suspected of violating road safety regulations, resulting in the death of a person. The offence carries a maximum sentence of eight years’ imprisonment.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The proceedings are being led by the Odesa Specialised Prosecutor’s Office for the Southern Region.
