Donald Trump plans to deploy 15,000 troops and around 100 aircraft to the Strait of Hormuz
The US Central Command has announced the launch of Operation Freedom, which aims to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The operation will begin on 4 May at the behest of US President Donald Trump.
The statement notes that US forces are commencing support for vessels to ensure their safe passage through one of the key international maritime corridors. A significant proportion of oil, fuel and fertilisers is transported through it.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper emphasised that this mission is important for regional security and the global economy. He also noted that a naval blockade is currently in place.
According to CENTCOM, the operation will involve missile-equipped destroyers, over a hundred aircraft, various types of unmanned aerial vehicles and around 15,000 military personnel.
Earlier, Donald Trump had stated his intention to assist countries that had approached the US with a request to ensure the passage of their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, and announced the launch of this initiative.
