Donald Trump is ready to offer Ukraine security guarantees
This was revealed from conversations that the American leader had with representatives of European countries and Kyiv, reports Politico.
According to sources familiar with the content of the telephone negotiations, in the event of a ceasefire, the US may assume a role as a restraining factor to prevent a new aggression by Russia. However, Trump explicitly stated: such support should not be part of NATO mechanisms.
The exact meaning of "security guarantees" is not specified. The discussions only referred to a general concept of protecting Ukraine after the end of hostilities. Likely, it involves political or economic tools that could deter Moscow from a new invasion.
According to British officials, Trump considers security guarantees as part of a possible "peace settlement" of the conflict. He also emphasized that the role of the US in this process is crucial — although he also made it clear that American military support to Ukraine could be significantly limited.
It is expected that if a ceasefire is reached, the US will not continue direct arms supplies to Kyiv but may allow supplies through European countries — on a sale basis. According to preliminary information, the volume of this assistance will be significantly less than Ukraine expects.
