Law enforcement officers arrested the deputy head of one of the departments at JSC ‘Ukrzaliznytsia’ whilst he was receiving an unlawful benefit. According to the investigation, he demanded money in exchange for facilitating the removal of railway tracks.

Operatives from the National Police’s Department of Strategic Investigations and staff from the State Bureau of Investigations have exposed an official for corruption.

According to the investigation, a mining company approached JSC Ukrzaliznytsia regarding the dismantling and paperwork for a reserve bypass track. This track is under the company’s jurisdiction and was required to expand the quarry’s boundaries.

The deputy head of one of the departments at JSC Ukrzaliznytsia valued his assistance at 100,000 dollars. As a guarantee of the fulfilment of the agreements, he signed a receipt for the funds.

On 8 April, law enforcement officers detained him whilst he was exchanging the receipt for cash. He has been notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning the receipt by a public official of an unlawful benefit on an especially large scale.

The penalty under this article provides for up to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The Office of the Prosecutor General is overseeing the proceedings in the case.

In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until their guilt has been proven in accordance with the law and established by a court conviction.
