The Russian capital is no longer considered a safe place – fear of Ukrainian drones is growing within the Kremlin. Despite this, Putin has decided to hold a parade in Red Square on 9 May. According to opposition media reports, mobile internet will be completely shut down in Moscow and St Petersburg to prevent it from being used to guide drones.

This is reported by the German newspaper BILD.

Deputy Alexei Zhuravlev, deputy chairman of the State Duma’s Defence Committee, has described the parade as a ‘dangerous event’ – again, due to the possibility of attacks by Ukrainian drones.

However, Moscow fears more than just that: according to European intelligence, Putin fears an assassination attempt or even a coup. Drones are seen as a potential weapon in this scenario.

In response, the Kremlin is stepping up defences around the capital. A map based on satellite imagery is circulating online. It shows a new air defence ring around Moscow. It is claimed that by 2025 alone, around 43 special towers equipped with air defence systems will have been built.

Reports are appearing on social media that air defence units are being withdrawn from other regions for this purpose. The state cannot protect everything at once and is concentrating its defences on a single point – Moscow.

It is worth recalling that at the end of March, Putin also signed amendments to the law on weapons and, for the first time, allowed private security companies to use small arms to protect critical infrastructure, primarily oil facilities. The law explicitly states that this concerns countering ‘unmanned aerial vehicles’.
