In the city of Galați in eastern Romania, near the border with Ukraine, a drone crashed into a residential block of flats. Two people were injured in the explosion and fire, and the building’s residents were evacuated.

In the Romanian city of Galați, located near the border with Ukraine, a drone struck a high-rise residential building.

According to local emergency services and law enforcement, an explosion occurred following the impact and a flat on the tenth floor caught fire. Two people who were inside the flat managed to leave the building unaided.

A 14-year-old boy and a woman were injured in the incident. It is reported that the woman suffered first-degree burns, whilst the boy is believed to have suffered a panic attack.

An alarm was raised via the Ro-Alert emergency notification system at around 01:53. Following the incident, around 70 residents were evacuated from the building.

Galati police reported that the strike was accompanied by an explosion and a fire. Law enforcement officers, rescue workers, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and specialist units of the Intelligence Service are working at the scene.

Experts are establishing the circumstances of the incident. According to preliminary assessments, the drone’s payload may have detonated immediately upon impact, so no further evacuation was ordered.

Following the incident, several NATO fighter jets were scrambled to the Galatz area.
