Spain to supply Ukraine with five missiles for Patriot systems — media reports
This is reported by El País, citing government sources.
The President of Ukraine has not spoken publicly about this agreement. It concerns the supply of PAC-2 missiles, which are in short supply in Ukraine and are required as part of the Patriot air defence system to shoot down Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.
They are currently in service with a Spanish Army anti-aircraft artillery regiment in Valencia. The total cost of five such missiles is around €15 million, with each missile costing €3–4 million individually.
At the same time, the publication notes that the main problem remains not funding, but a shortage of such missiles on the global market. Demand has risen significantly against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East.
The American company Raytheon, the main manufacturer of the PAC-2, is currently unable to meet the growing demand. In particular, the delivery of four Patriot 3+ batteries, which Spain ordered for almost €1.5 billion, has been postponed until 2031.
Despite this, the Spanish government has decided to transfer part of its own stockpile to Ukraine, which, according to sources, increases the value of this decision.
This is not the first time Spain has supplied Patriot missiles to Kyiv. In 2024, the country had already supplied two batches of an unspecified number of missiles. At that time, the decision was taken following lengthy negotiations with NATO, which had been putting pressure on countries possessing these missiles to provide them to Ukraine. Now the Spanish government has taken the initiative itself.
