Spain intercepts record cocaine shipment in the Atlantic
Spanish police have carried out the largest maritime cocaine seizure in their history, intercepting almost 10 tonnes of drugs on a cargo ship near the Canary Islands. It is reported by The Guardian with reference to the statement of the Spanish National Police.
According to the publication, law enforcement officers acted as part of an investigation into the activities of an international criminal group that transported «huge volumes» of cocaine from South America to Europe. The suspicious vessel left Brazil and was carrying a cargo of salt, among which were hidden bales of drugs.
A total of 9,994 kilograms of cocaine were found on board. The police had to literally dig out the packages from among a large mass of salt. According to investigators, the seizure was a serious blow to the logistics routes of drug cartels using sea freight to smuggle into the EU.
