The EU will not withdraw its diplomats from Kyiv despite threats from the Kremlin
This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Announi during a briefing.
The European Union will not evacuate its diplomatic staff from Kyiv despite threats from the Kremlin.
European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni stated that the EU would not change its position or presence in the Ukrainian capital.
Earlier, Moscow had called on foreign embassies to evacuate their staff and citizens from Kyiv. The Russian Federation stated that “retaliatory strikes are inevitable” if Ukraine disrupts the Victory Day celebrations on 9 May.
The European Commission described these statements as part of Russia’s reckless escalation tactics.
“Russia is once again outrageously attempting to blame Ukraine for its own aggressive war. As for us, the EU, we will not change our position or presence in Kyiv,” El Anouni stated.
According to him, Russian attacks have already become a daily reality for Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
The European Commission spokesperson also recalled that Russia has already caused damage to several embassies, including the EU mission.
El Anouni noted that Ukraine has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and peace. He specifically mentioned President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent proposal.
“Russia has never shown any serious intention of stopping the war, but instead continues to escalate the conflict and kill people,” said the European Commission spokesperson.
