The EU officially extended temporary protection for Ukrainians
The Council of the European Union officially extended temporary protection for persons displaced from Ukraine due to the full-scale war until March 4, 2027.
As stated in the announcement, the decision was made based on a Directive that allows the continuation of temporary protection in situations where return to the country of origin is impossible due to war or the threat of mass human rights violations.
The EU Council emphasized that the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia continues, and the security situation remains critical. According to EU data, as of 2025, over 4.3 million Ukrainians are benefiting from temporary protection in EU countries.
The decision allows Ukrainians to continue legally residing, working, studying, and receiving basic social assistance in EU countries without the need to seek asylum.
The document also notes that member states will continue to exchange information to avoid duplication of statuses in different countries.
