Europeans are more likely to see the US as a threat than China, according to a survey
This is according to a Politico poll.
According to the poll, only 12% of those surveyed in March in Poland, Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy considered the US a close ally, whilst 36% viewed it as a threat.
Notably, 29% of respondents in these six countries viewed China as a threat.
At the national level, the threat from Washington surpassed that from Beijing in four countries, and only respondents in France and Poland perceived the threat from China as greater.
Russia, according to the survey, is seen as a clear enemy – 70% of all respondents view it as a threat.
Residents of Spain were the most negative towards the US: 51% of them stated that Washington poses a threat to Europe, which is the highest figure among those surveyed.
In Italy, 46% of respondents said the US posed a threat; this view is shared by 42% of Belgians, 37% of French people and 30% of Germans.
Poland was the exception, as it borders Russia and regards its alliance with the US as its key security guarantee: only 13% of respondents said that the US posed a risk.
