NATO countries allocated $500 million for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine
On Thursday, November 13, the defense ministers of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, as well as the head of the Icelandic MFA announced that the countries will jointly allocate $500 million to the NATO initiative PURL.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the decision of the allies to fund a joint military aid package for Ukraine.
«Our northern and Baltic allies are increasing funding for the next package of critically important military equipment for Ukraine. This equipment is extremely important as Ukraine enters the winter months, and supplies through PURL are reaching Ukraine. NATO allies will continue to supply the necessary equipment and materials», – stated the Secretary General.
At the same time, the joint statement on the Finnish MFA website following the meeting of ministers in Helsinki notes that representatives of the eight countries also committed to providing Ukraine with long-term and coordinated military support.
Specifically, this involves assistance through the development of capacity, defense industry cooperation, and strengthening Ukraine's ability to deter future Russian aggression.
«To demonstrate our support, we have jointly decided to contribute $500 million under the Ukraine Priority Needs List (PURL) initiative. This initiative provides a mechanism for purchasing critically important defense equipment from the United States, directly contributing to Ukraine's resilience and defense against Russian aggression. This is one of many ways our countries support Ukraine», – the joint statement of the countries reads.
