Lavrov has stated that Russia will not return to Eurovision due to ‘satanism’
This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to The Moscow Times.
“We will not accept the criteria that currently determine Eurovision participants and which are, in truth, criteria of outright Satanism,” he said.
According to Lavrov, Russia is willing to participate only in cultural initiatives aimed at “preserving and promoting art in the spirit of traditional values”.
Earlier, Eurovision director Martin Green told LBC in an interview that, in theory, Russia could be readmitted to the contest, as it was excluded not because of the war in Ukraine, but because of the inability to prove the independence of the state broadcaster VDRT from the Kremlin.
The statement caused a widespread public outcry, after which Green assured that Russia’s return to the contest was not being considered.
The country was excluded from Eurovision following the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Afterwards, Putin ordered the revival of ‘Intervision’ – the Soviet song contest from the era of Leonid Brezhnev. The first such event, involving 22 countries, took place in 2025. Vietnamese singer Dick Phuc won “Intervision”.
As a reminder, the final of the 70th Eurovision Song Contest concluded in Vienna on 17 May. The winner of this year’s contest was Bulgaria’s representative DARA with the song “Bangaranga”.
