Maduro and his wife have already been captured and taken out of the country, Trump said.
On the night of 3 January, Venezuela's capital Caracas was hit by a series of attacks. According to eyewitnesses and international media, at least seven explosions were heard in the city around 02:00 local time, low-flying aircraft were spotted in the sky, and power outages occurred in some areas
According to preliminary data, several key military and infrastructure facilities could have been hit, including the main military base of Fuerte Tuna, La Carlota air base, the port of La Guaira on the Caribbean coast and the Cerro El Volcán communications centre. Explosions were also reported near the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of Venezuela. Witnesses saw armoured vehicles near the presidential palace Miraflores
Venezuelan authorities strongly condemned the US actions. President Nicolas Maduro signed a decree declaring a state of emergency and declared the country's right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the event an act of military aggression
Washington confirmed the strikes. According to the US media, the administration of Donald Trump has acknowledged that the military operation in Venezuela is ongoing. The White House has promised to issue an official statement after the US aircraft leave the country's airspace. The US Embassy urged its citizens to refrain from travelling to Venezuela
At the same time, it is reported that Maduro met with China's special envoy on the eve of the attack, and it is unknown whether the delegation managed to leave Caracas before the strikes began
Later, US President Donald Trump wrote on SocialTruth "The US has successfully conducted a full-scale strike on Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been captured and taken out of the country." Trump has announced a press conference in Mar-a-Lago at 11:00 a.m. local time (18:00 Kyiv time) on the operation in Venezuela
