A large-scale forest fire in the Chernihiv region has spread to over 4,000 hectares
A large-scale forest fire is continuing in the border areas of the Chernihiv region. According to the latest figures, the area affected by the fire has reached around 4,300 hectares.
It is noted that the area affected by the fire has almost doubled in the last 24 hours.
The fire broke out as a result of heavy shelling from Russia. Firefighting efforts are being significantly hampered by drone attacks, which are reportedly targeting firefighting equipment.
The forest protection service of the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’ is working to prevent the fire from spreading to forest areas deeper within Ukrainian territory.
Equipment is operating round the clock to contain the fire. Additional mineralised strips are being created on site.
New tractors and equipment, recently purchased by the company, are also being used. Disc harrows and ploughs are being used to work the land between forest stands, along roads and near settlements, creating firebreaks.
According to the report, the fire front has changed direction and begun moving towards Russian territory.
