During the arrest of an armed suspect in the Cherkasy district, law enforcement officers came under targeted fire. The attacker was eliminated, and the investigation is clarifying all the circumstances of the tragedy.

On 27 January, four police officers were killed and another was wounded and hospitalised during a special operation in the village of Nekhvoroshch, Cherkasy district. This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine.

According to law enforcement officials, police were conducting an investigation to establish the involvement of a local resident in a serious crime committed last year. Upon seeing the security forces, the man fled his home, taking automatic weapons with him, and hid in a forest belt.

During the search, the suspect opened fire on the police officers. As a result of the shooting, four law enforcement officers died on the spot, and the fifth was taken to hospital with injuries. The attacker was eliminated by special forces.

The deceased man was a local resident born in 1967. During a search of his property, investigators found a cache of weapons, ammunition, grenades, cartridges, and about four kilograms of narcotics.

Information about the incident has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for attempting to take the life of a law enforcement officer. The investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Main Department of the National Police in Cherkasy Region and the Main Investigation Department of the State Bureau of Investigations under the procedural guidance of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor's Office. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
