A blackout has occurred at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — it is currently without external power
This has been reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
On 24 March, the Agency reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had lost power from its main high-voltage line — the ‘Dniprovska’. After that, it was connected only to the backup ‘Ferosplavna-1’ line.
The IAEA is holding talks with Ukraine and Russia to secure a local ceasefire necessary for repairs.
Occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP: what is known
The Russians occupied the ZNPP in early March 2022 — since then, it has been operating under their control. An IAEA mission has been at the plant since September 2022. Ukraine insists on the withdrawal of Russian occupiers from the plant. Russia refuses to establish a demilitarised zone at the ZNPP.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP has repeatedly lost its external power supply due to hostilities near the plant. In such cases, it has switched to backup diesel generators. The longest blackout was the tenth, which occurred due to Russian shelling and lasted a month — from 23 September to 23 October 2025.
The issue of the ZNPP remains a key one in the trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the US and Russia. In January, Politico reported, citing sources, that Russia had proposed during the talks that electricity from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant be shared between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already stated that such an idea seems unrealistic. Instead, he proposed that the ZNPP be operated by Ukraine and the US.
