Olga Sopit, aged 23, won Ukraine’s first-ever gold medal at the European Championships in women’s foil.

This has been reported by the National Fencing Federation of Ukraine.

In the final, the Ukrainian fencer defeated one of the world’s most decorated fencers — Olympic champion, 10-time world champion and 15-time European champion Arianna Errigo of Italy, with a score of 15–8.

Sopit already had a gold medal from the 2023 European Junior Championships in her collection, but at major senior international tournaments – where she was competing for the fifth time – she had not yet managed to progress beyond the round of 32.

For Ukraine, this is the first-ever European Championship gold medal in women’s foil. Prior to this, the best result had been a silver medal won by Daria Myronyuk in 2024.

At this year’s championships, Sopit’s gold is Ukraine’s second medal. Prior to this, Alina Komashchuk won a bronze medal.
