The Iranian President has declared the US naval blockade to be futile
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that any attempts to impose a naval blockade against Iran contravene international law and will not succeed, according to CNN.
“Any attempt to impose a naval blockade and restrictions contravenes international law and harms the interests of countries in the region, global peace and stability, and is doomed to failure,” he said.
The statement came amid reports that US President Donald Trump is considering extending the blockade as a means of pressuring Iran to return to negotiations.
Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected global energy markets. Meanwhile, unemployment is rising within the country and the national currency is depreciating.
Peseshkian made his statement on the occasion of National Persian Gulf Day, which commemorates the expulsion of Portugal from the Strait of Hormuz in the 17th century. He described this waterway as “a symbol of the resistance of the great Iranian nation”.
Earlier, Mohsen Rezaei, senior military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, also warned of a possible response should the blockade continue. “If the blockade continues, Iran will respond,” he said in an interview with state television.
