Reuters reported on the planned meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit
US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the NATO summit in Turkey. A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters this.
According to the agency’s source, Trump will arrive at the summit on Tuesday. His first scheduled meeting will be with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is hosting the event. The US president is also due to hold talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and give a press conference.
As the US official noted, Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy is scheduled for Wednesday. According to him, the parties will discuss “how we can end the war”.
“Over the past few months, the situation on the battlefield has clearly stalled, and neither side is making significant progress. The President feels there is a real need to try to put an end to this,” said the US representative.
According to the official, following talks with Zelenskyy, Trump is likely to continue his discussions with Vladimir Putin.
The Reuters source also said that the US President would call on NATO allies to increase defence spending. “He will deliver this message in person,” the official noted.
Furthermore, he said that defence deals worth billions of dollars are set to be announced during the summit, though he did not provide any details.
As Reuters notes, European officials hope that Donald Trump’s good relations with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will contribute to the summit’s success. At the same time, they remain concerned about the ongoing transatlantic tensions linked to the war in Iran, as well as the US President’s criticism of NATO.
