Romania closes Russian consulate following drone strike on Galați
The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, made this announcement following a meeting of the National Security Council, according to Digi24.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced that the Russian Consul General in Constanța would be declared persona non grata.
Bucharest will also close the Russian Consulate General in Constanța.
The decision was taken following a meeting of the National Security Council, which was convened in response to an incident in the city of Galați. On the night of 29 May, a Russian drone struck a residential building, causing an explosion and a fire in a flat on the 10th floor.
According to Nicușor Dan, this was a serious incident in which two citizens were injured.
“Last night, a serious incident occurred, resulting in two citizens being injured, and Russia bears full responsibility for this. The Russian Consul General in Constanța has been declared persona non grata, and the consulate in Constanța will be closed,” stated the President of Romania.
What was discussed at the Security Council
Niculescu Dan reported that the issue of civil defence was discussed separately at the National Security Council meeting.
According to him, the Romanian services’ response following the incident was swift. The Minister of the Interior reported on the measures already implemented across the entire potentially dangerous area.
These include, in particular, increasing staffing levels and tightening security measures.
The President of Romania stated that the country is prepared to respond in this regard.
Discussions with NATO
Dan also reported that he had discussed the incident in Galați with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The President of Romania described the drone strike as “the most serious security incident” to have occurred on Romanian territory since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
According to him, Mark Rutte expressed the Alliance’s “absolute solidarity” with Romania and confirmed that NATO is “ready to defend every inch of its allies’ territory”.
What led to the decision
The incident occurred on the night of 29 May. A Russian drone struck a residential building, injuring two people.
For Romania, a NATO member, this was not only a domestic security challenge but also a diplomatic signal to Moscow: Russia’s strikes on Ukraine are increasingly posing direct risks to the territory of Alliance countries.
