US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the full-scale invasion of Ukraine had been a strategic disaster for Russia, and that the Kremlin had failed to achieve most of its key objectives.

This is according to CNBC.

Speaking during a hearing in the US Congress, Rubio noted that Moscow had counted on a quick victory, but more than four years after the start of the major war, Russia continues to suffer significant losses and faces ever-greater challenges.

“The invasion of Ukraine has been a strategic disaster for Russia,” the US Secretary of State emphasised.

According to Rubio, Ukrainian forces are not only holding back the Russian advance but are also gradually shifting the fighting onto Russian territory.

He noted that in recent months, Ukraine has significantly stepped up long-range strikes on Russian military and economic infrastructure.

The Secretary of State also noted that the Ukrainian army is demonstrating high effectiveness on the battlefield.

“The Ukrainians are not only fighting bravely – they are fighting effectively,” he said.

Separately, Rubio cited estimates from the US Department of Defence, according to which the Russian army is suffering extremely high casualties.

According to him, for the first time since the war began, the number of Russian military personnel killed exceeds the number of wounded, indicating that the fighting is becoming increasingly difficult for Russia.

At the same time, Rubio confirmed that the US administration continues to seek opportunities for a political settlement of the war. According to him, Washington’s task is to determine whether there is a realistic path to negotiations between the parties.

“Ultimately, this war will end at the negotiating table,” the Secretary of State said.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Kyiv and Moscow’s positions on the terms for ending the war remain very far apart at present.
