Rubio has suggested that NATO’s role may need to be reviewed in light of the allies’ stance on Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the United States may ‘reconsider’ NATO’s role following the conclusion of the conflict with Iran, due to the actions of certain European countries, according to TVP World.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio said that questions arise regarding the value of the alliance if the US cannot rely on its allies at strategically important moments.
“If we have reached the point where NATO means we cannot use these bases to defend American interests, then NATO becomes a one-sided agreement,” he said.
According to Rubio, the alliance has historically been beneficial to the US, as it has allowed the use of European bases to respond to threats beyond the continent.
He added that once the conflict is over, the US “will have to review this relationship”, with the final decision to be made by President Donald Trump.
At the same time, it is noted that NATO countries retain full control over their territory, including decisions regarding access to bases and the use of airspace.
Rubio’s comments came against a backdrop of growing tensions within the alliance and discussions regarding the sharing of responsibilities among allies.
Separately, Donald Trump criticised European countries in posts on Truth Social for refusing to support the US in a war against Iran. In particular, he expressed dissatisfaction with the stance of the UK and France.
Trump stated that countries facing aviation fuel shortages due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz should rely less on the US and meet their energy needs independently.
“The US will no longer help you, just as you have not helped us,” he wrote.
In another post, Trump accused France of blocking US military aircraft carrying supplies to Israel from flying through its airspace. He called France “very unhelpful” and added that the US would remember this.
