SBU: ‘Somali’, a militant who fought against Ukraine, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to the SBU, a militant from Russian armed groups, who was detained by counter-intelligence and special service investigators in October 2025 in Volyn, has been sentenced to a prison term.
The investigation established that the suspect had arrived in western Ukraine posing as an internally displaced person. According to the investigation, his aim was to obtain a Ukrainian passport so that he could subsequently travel to the European Union.
SBU officers detained him at a hotel in Kovel. According to the security service, it was from there that he planned to flee.
During searches of the detainee’s room, law enforcement officers found Russian and “DPR” passports, as well as a military ID and insignia of the Russian armed forces.
The SBU reported that the detainee was a resident of Donetsk who had joined the Russian-controlled armed group “Somali” back in 2015.
According to the investigation, as part of this unit, he took part in the fighting for Donetsk Airport. There, as noted by the security service, he was wounded and “struck off” the enemy unit’s roster.
After that, according to the investigation, the man travelled to Volyn, using his status as an internally displaced person as a cover.
The SBU claims that in Volyn he hoped to obtain a Ukrainian passport and travel to the EU, using the disability he acquired following his injury. According to the security service, one of his limbs was amputated.
Based on the SBU’s evidence, the court found him guilty under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
These are Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code – treason committed under martial law – and Part 2 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code – participation in the activities of armed formations not provided for by law.
The security service noted that, taking into account his cooperation with the investigation, the defendant was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The investigation into this case was conducted by SBU officers in the Volyn region in conjunction with the State Border Guard Service under the procedural supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.
As reported by ThePublic, a Somali teenager has been charged with the murder of Ukrainian Vadym Davydenko.
