The SSU has explained the detention of a NABU employee at a checkpoint near Sumy
The Security Service of Ukraine commented on the situation regarding the detention of an employee of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau at a checkpoint near Sumy. The agency stated that the security forces’ actions were linked to the need for further checks on the individual.
The SSU noted that during the full-scale invasion, its officers are maintaining a round-the-clock counter-intelligence regime at checkpoints in frontline regions.
According to the SSU, a Ukrainian citizen was identified at one of the checkpoints at the entrance to Sumy who exhibited signs requiring further verification.
The statement noted that the man was from the temporarily occupied territories, did not disclose his place of work, and presented only a page from the ‘Diya’ app to confirm his identity. During an analysis of his contacts, a number of Russian phone numbers were also identified.
The Security Service stated that officers acted in accordance with established instructions and procedures for such situations and initiated a thorough check of the man.
The agency emphasised that the SSU operates within the framework of current legislation and adheres to procedures aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and military personnel carrying out combat missions in the Sumy region.
Earlier, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau stated that SSU officers had detained one of their employees at a checkpoint near the entrance to Sumy. The bureau noted that he was in the city whilst carrying out his official duties as part of an official investigation.
The NABU also reported that prior to his appointment, the employee had undergone the necessary checks, including a polygraph test at the Bureau’s Internal Control Department, during which potential links or collaboration with representatives of the aggressor state or collaborationist structures were examined.
The bureau stated that the incident hinders the performance of official duties within the framework of criminal proceedings and announced that measures are being taken to clarify the circumstances of the situation.
The SSU did not specify whether the NABU employee had been released following the check.
