36 states and the EU have acceded to the agreement
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi, Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset has provided Ukraine with legal confirmation that 36 states and the European Union have acceded to the agreement on the establishment of a steering committee for the future tribunal. According to Sybiga, the issue of responsibility for the aggression against Ukraine concerns not only the past but also the future of international law and security in Europe.
“Putin, Shoigu, Gerasimov, Bortnikov, Zolotov, Medvedev, Patrushev, Lukashenko and others — today they have all received their ticket to The Hague,” said the minister.
He also noted that Ukraine has repeatedly endured wars and repression that have gone without proper legal assessment. That is precisely why, in his view, the establishment of the tribunal is of fundamental importance.
The tribunal is scheduled to begin work in The Hague
Discussions on the idea of establishing a separate mechanism to address the Russian Federation’s crime of aggression began in the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is expected that the initial phase of the tribunal’s work will take place in The Hague. The Netherlands has already confirmed its readiness to host this mechanism. Earlier, the Council of Europe supported the launch of the special tribunal. Denmark has also joined the initiative.
