A special tribunal for Russia is set to be established as early as next month
Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga made this statement during a televised marathon, according to ‘Delovaya Stolitsa’.
According to the Foreign Minister, the agreement is to be formally ratified at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The meeting is scheduled for May in Chisinau.
Legal foundation
For the formal establishment of the Tribunal under the procedure, 16 signatory countries are required. Ukraine has already received confirmation from this number of partners, although the necessary internal procedures are currently ongoing in the capitals of these states.
“This is important because the next stage is the meeting of the Council of Europe’s foreign ministers in Chisinau. We have secured exactly this number of states in order to legally and formally establish the tribunal,” emphasised Andriy Sybiga.
The special tribunal will focus specifically on the “crime of aggression”, which will enable Russia’s senior leadership to be held to account. Sibiga had previously announced the accession of “yet another influential state” to this process, reinforcing confidence in the May deadline.
