The US is proposing to form a coalition to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz
According to a US State Department document seen by Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, Washington is insisting on the formation of an international coalition to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
This maritime route remains blocked and accounts for around 20% of global oil and gas supplies. This has already driven up global energy prices and heightened fears of an economic downturn.
Negotiations between the US and Iran are currently at a standstill. Washington is awaiting an updated version of Iran’s peace proposal, which, according to some media reports, could be presented by Friday, 1 May.
Meanwhile, Axios reports that on 30 April, the US military plans to present Donald Trump with new options for possible military operations in Iran.
A State Department document states that a coalition called the ‘Freedom of Navigation Initiative’ is intended to bring together the efforts of various states to stabilise the situation in the Persian Gulf region.
The mission’s objectives include the exchange of intelligence and navigation information, the coordination of diplomatic efforts, and assistance in monitoring compliance with sanctions.
The project is to be implemented jointly by the US State Department and US Central Command. American diplomats have been tasked with gauging partners’ readiness to participate in the form of diplomatic or military support.
Letters sent to embassies state that participation in the coalition will strengthen joint capabilities to restore shipping and protect the global economy.
Washington believes that only joint action can demonstrate a united front and increase pressure on Iran, which is blocking passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It is envisaged that the new structure will complement existing mechanisms, in particular security initiatives led by the UK and France.
Previously, France, the UK and other countries discussed participating in such a mission, but noted that they were ready to assist once this route was restored.
