The US has approved the sale of guided aerial bombs to Ukraine worth over $370 million
The US State Department has approved the potential sale to Ukraine of kits for converting conventional aerial bombs into Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM) guided munitions, along with associated equipment. The total value of the deal is estimated at $373.6 million.
Under the request, the Ukrainian government plans to purchase 1,200 KMU-572 JDAM kits and 332 KMU-556 JDAM kits. These are tail modules used to upgrade munitions.
The package also includes FMU-139 fuze systems, ancillary equipment, spare parts, consumables, technical documentation, software, logistical support, transport services and other related items.
Such aerial bombs were used to strike Tehran. The weight of the aerial bomb can reach 1,000 kg, and upon detonation it creates a crater up to 5 metres deep.
The proposed sale is intended to support US foreign policy and security objectives by strengthening the security of a partner country, which is regarded as a factor in political stability and economic development in Europe.
Boeing has been designated as the prime contractor.
