The US and Russia are discussing a possible ‘ceasefire’ without security guarantees for Ukraine — media reports
This is reported by Liga.net, citing government sources and Ukrainian intelligence.
According to the media’s sources, this involves a possible temporary ceasefire agreement without clear security guarantees for Ukraine, but with a potential easing of sanctions against Russia and without a final political settlement of the war.
At the same time, sources claim that the Kremlin continues to insist on its key demands – recognition of the occupied territories, special status or control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and Ukraine’s renunciation of NATO membership.
The report notes that it is currently unknown who exactly initiated these contacts – the American or Russian side.
Although there is currently no direct confirmation of a “secret deal” from major Western media outlets, similar reports have been appearing in the international press in recent days.
In particular, the Kyiv Independent reported that Washington is promoting a new initiative for a temporary ceasefire, which provides for the easing of sanctions against Russia but does not include security guarantees for Ukraine.
According to one of the publication’s sources, “they want Ukraine to agree to as much as possible – or at least not to stand in the way”.
In Kyiv, this approach is causing serious concern. The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated that any ceasefire without mechanisms to deter Russia will merely give Moscow time to regroup and prepare a new offensive.
That is precisely why Kyiv insists that a mere freezing of the front line is not peace, and that any agreement without real guarantees will only postpone a new phase of the war. Key priorities for Ukraine remain either NATO membership or a system of allied commitments with specific military mechanisms.
This information comes against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Donald Trump’s administration and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Western media claim that peace talks have effectively reached an impasse, as the US is increasingly focusing on the conflict surrounding Iran, whilst in Europe there is growing mistrust of the American strategy regarding Ukraine. Against this backdrop, Kyiv is relying on its own defence industry and the support of its European partners.
