The US has postponed sanctions against Lukoil petrol stations
This is according to Reuters.
The Donald Trump administration has extended a licence allowing Lukoil petrol stations outside Russia to continue operating.
This is a temporary relaxation of the sanctions imposed by the US last year with the aim of restricting revenues which, according to US estimates, could be used to fund Russia’s war against Ukraine. As stated on the US Treasury Department’s website, the exemption for approximately 2,000 petrol stations located in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Americas has been extended until 29 October.
Thus, the company’s overseas network retains the ability to operate under the current sanctions regime for the time being. The decision is viewed as a technical clarification of the sanctions regime rather than a general easing of restrictions.
The US continues its policy of putting pressure on Russia’s energy sector, whilst maintaining certain exemptions that allow parts of large companies’ international infrastructure to continue operating, writes Reuters.
