A gunman in Kyiv claimed to be a Russian general and recorded his actions
Law enforcement officers found video and audio recordings of his actions on the phone of the man who opened fire on people in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv on 18 April. According to Ivan Vyhovskyi, Head of the National Police of Ukraine, in one of the videos he was walking through the entrance hall of a block of flats and calling himself a ‘Russian general’.
“When we looked at certain files on his phone, he was constantly filming himself whilst he was shooting. At times, he walked through the entrance hall and called himself a general of the Russian army,” Vygivsky noted. The police believe that the recordings found may indicate mental health issues in the attacker.
The investigation also established that the man had been in a long-standing dispute with a neighbour over domestic issues, in particular regarding the installation of locks. According to Vygivsky, he reacted strongly to any signs of disrespect and took offence when, in his opinion, he was treated with contempt.
On 18 April, the 58-year-old man opened fire on people, after which he barricaded himself inside a supermarket and took hostages. Seven people were killed in the attack. The attacker was killed during a special operation.
