The Commander-in-Chief visited the Southern Air Command, emphasising issues relating to the management of air defence forces and assets, the speed of information exchange, coordination between all components of the Defence Forces, and the adaptation of the air defence system to Russia’s new tactics of sustained shelling.
“The enemy continues targeted attacks on port infrastructure in southern Ukraine: ports, grain terminals, maritime logistics facilities and other civilian infrastructure. The enemy’s aim is to disrupt the maritime corridor, deal a blow to the state’s economy and create additional security threats in the Black Sea region. Our task is to prevent these plans from being carried out,” stated Syrskyi.
The military discussed the use of mobile fire groups, small-scale air defence units and tactical groups for intercepting Russian drones, as well as their integration into a unified air defence system.
Syrskyi announced directives to improve the air defence command and control system, develop air target detection capabilities, expand the use of tactical interception groups, and accelerate the implementation of new technological solutions to counter massive enemy air attacks.
“Ukraine is currently operating amid a shortage of modern air defence systems and missiles for them. That is precisely why the rational use of available resources, improving the effectiveness of every element of the air defence system, and continuing to receive modern anti-aircraft systems and ammunition from partners are of paramount importance,” the Commander-in-Chief noted.
Shortage of missiles for air defence: what is known
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent an urgent letter to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress warning of a critical shortage of air defence resources in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also asked the US President and Congress to help Ukraine obtain Patriot PAC-3 missiles and additional air defence systems to protect against Russian attacks. Furthermore, the letter states that Ukraine is facing difficulties in obtaining American weapons through the PURL programme.
Furthermore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the US to grant Ukraine licences to manufacture missiles for the Patriot air defence systems. According to him, the current production rates for such munitions no longer match the scale of modern threats.
