Taiwan has detected two Chinese military vessels near the Penghu Islands
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence reported that late on Monday, a Chinese destroyer and a frigate entered waters south-west of the Penghu Islands. These islands are located near the Taiwan Strait and are home to important naval and air bases, according to Reuters.
The Taiwanese military tracked the ships’ movements and deployed naval and air forces to respond. The ministry did not specify the exact location of the ships, but released aerial photographs of both vessels.
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and regularly sends military ships and aircraft to the area around the island. The Taiwanese government condemns such actions.
The Chinese Ministry of Defence did not provide an immediate comment. Previously, Beijing had stated that regular military activity around Taiwan was justified, and blamed the authorities in Taipei for the tensions.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, speaking to coastguard personnel, noted that China is intensifying so-called grey-zone operations and psychological pressure.
“They are trying to create a new normal that undermines the status quo,” he said.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence, nine Chinese military vessels have been operating around the island over the past 24 hours, and 22 military aircraft have been recorded.
Taiwan has also announced plans to strengthen its coastguard capabilities, notably by developing integrated maritime and aerial surveillance systems, as well as expanding the use of drones, new radars and infrared systems.
The Taiwanese government rejects Beijing’s claims to sovereignty over the island and stresses that the future of the territory can only be determined by its inhabitants.
