The EU has extended sanctions against Russia for another year over human rights violations
This is stated in a statement on the Council of the EU’s website.
The sanctions target 72 individuals and one organisation deemed responsible for human rights violations, repression against the population and the opposition, as well as undermining democracy and the rule of law in the Russian Federation.
Their assets remain frozen, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funding. They are also subject to a travel ban to EU member states.
The Council of the EU reiterated that the European Union remains unwavering in its condemnation of human rights violations and repression in Russia and is deeply concerned about the further deterioration of the human rights situation in the country, particularly in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
On 11 May, the EU Council also imposed sanctions against a further 16 Russians and seven organisations responsible for the illegal deportation and forced assimilation of Ukrainian children. On the same day, the UK also imposed similar sanctions for the deportation of Ukrainian children.
As a reminder, Zelenskyy had previously imposed sanctions against Russians involved in missile attacks in Ukraine.
