The G7 summit kicks off in France: Ukraine, the war and negotiations with the EU are on the agenda
The G7 Summit will take place on 15–17 June 2026 in Évian-les-Bains, according to the European Council. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the main priority of France’s G7 presidency is to reduce global economic imbalances. Key topics at the summit will include Ukraine, Iran, critical minerals and economic disputes.
The G7 summit begins in France on 15 June and will run until 17 June. The city of Évian-les-Bains is hosting the meeting of the G7 leaders.
The summit will be attended by the leaders of the G7 countries, as well as representatives of the European Union. The EU will be represented by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Ukraine on the agenda
Russia’s war against Ukraine will be one of the main topics of the summit. According to Reuters, G7 leaders will discuss further support for Ukraine, as well as diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to take part in the summit events. The day before, he held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which the two discussed the war and diplomatic steps, and agreed to meet during the G7 summit.
At the same time, some media outlets reported that a face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump may not be included in the official schedule, but both presidents are expected to take part in the working session and may speak on the sidelines.
Ukraine’s negotiations with the EU
One of the topics expected in the context of Ukraine is the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
This issue is of political significance for Kyiv, as the opening of negotiation clusters is part of the European integration process and a signal of continued support for Ukraine from its partners.
What else will G7 leaders discuss
In addition to Ukraine, the summit agenda will include other global crises and economic issues.
G7 leaders will discuss the situation regarding Iran, the diversification of critical mineral supplies, dependence on China and global economic imbalances.
France, as the host country of the summit, states that its main priority during its G7 presidency is to reduce the imbalances that threaten the stability of the global economy and exacerbate trade and geopolitical tensions.
Trump’s role at the summit
The media is paying particular attention to the participation of US President Donald Trump. The Guardian reports that French President Emmanuel Macron has structured the summit agenda to avoid conflicts and preserve G7 unity.
According to Reuters, Trump is set to meet with Middle Eastern leaders and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His stance on Ukraine, Iran, China and global trade could significantly influence the summit’s final decisions.
Why the summit is important for Ukraine
For Ukraine, the G7 summit is a platform for discussing military, financial and diplomatic support.
Kyiv expects its partners to take further decisions on aid, sanctions against Russia, defence support and progress in negotiations on EU membership. At the same time, the final decisions will depend on the positions of all summit participants and the agreements that can be reached in Evian.
